Reforms of the Georgian penal system were introduced to the Delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

The Ministry of Corrections of Georgia presented executed reforms of the Georgian Prison System to the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan


Members of the delegation met with Deputy First Minister of Corrections Zviad Mikhanashvili and employees of the Ministry in the frameworks of the working visit.

Deputy First Minister Zviad Mikhanashvili provided detailed information regarding executed reforms, plans and novelties of the Georgian Penal System to the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The meeting also discussed inmates’ classification by risks, penitentiary healthcare that was highly improved in recent years. Infrastructural projects were also emphasized at the conference.

Deputy First Minister Zviad Mikhanasvili thanked the guests for their interest in executed reforms of the Georgian prison system.

Representatives of the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expressed their interest in an alternate sentence and inmates’ employment opportunities, information, that was provided by Deputy First Minister in detail. Mr. Mikhanashvili also introduced new initiatives of the Ministry to the guests according to which inmates are allowed to work and reduce their sentence.

Members of the delegation positively assessed all executed changes of the Georgian penal system and noted that they would share the Georgian experience.

The delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is planning to visit N16 Penitentiary Facility and get acquainted with the work specifics of the National Probation Agency in the frameworks of their official visit to Georgia.
