Kakha Kakhishvili held a meeting at the Presidential Administration
Minister of Corrections Kakha Kakhishvili met with President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili and members of Pardoning Commission.

The meeting discussed issues related to the pardon mechanism and commission’s work. It became known that a joint working group will be created between the Ministry of Corrections and the Presidential Administration of Georgia, which will work on all technical details that will improve pardon process and communication with units. It was also noted that the Pardon Commission would be expanded and the representative of the Ministry of Corrections will be involved in its work.

According to Kakha Kakhishvili, in case of violent crimes, members of the commission will have an opportunity to interview convicts directly in penitentiary facilities.

“We had a good working meeting with the President of Georgia and the members of the commission. We shared our experience regarding inmate’s releasement on parole in the frameworks of the conference. We agreed to create a working group that will contribute to a faster exchange of information. On the one hand, the humane approach must be maintained, but on the other hand, it is crucial to design such mechanisms that will exclude tragic cases. No one is insured, a crime is committed even if a person has never served in prison. We will never eliminate such cases, but must do our best to ensure that we are protected from unfortunate events” – said Mr. Kakhishvili.

According to Head of the Presidential Administration Giorgi Abashishvili, the minister’s initiative to involve a high-ranking representative of the Ministry of Corrections in commission’s work is acceptable for them.

“It is important to develop the process. It’s also a fact that there are certain types of shortcomings, but nobody avoids responsibility on this. The minister had an exciting vision regarding the improvement of the procedure, and we agreed to create the working group between the Presidential Administration and the Ministry in the upcoming days that will work on all technical details for the development” – said Mr. Abashishvili.
