Minister of Corrections met with Public Defender
Minister of Corrections Kakha Kakhishvili together with representatives of the Ministry met with Public Defender Nino Lomjaria.

Kakha Kakhishvili congratulated Nino Lomjaria on her new position and acquainted her with implemented and ongoing reforms as well as plans of the Georgian penal system.

The Minister also emphasized legislative changes at the meeting with the Ombudsman which aims to improve the rights of inmates/convicts. Mr. Kakhishvili also informed Ms. Lomjaria regarding executed and planned infrastructural projects in the penal system. According to the Minister, the Ministry’s one of the top priorities is to arrange prisons following modern standards.

The meeting also discussed the 2017 Parliamentary Report of the Public Defender of Georgia on Situation of Human Rights and Freedoms.

The Public Defender positively assessed reforms that were executed recently, though she noted that some issues need to be resolved.

Minister of Corrections Kakha Kakhishvili expressed hope that cooperation with the Ombudsman's Office will be fruitful and the existing challenges will be positively resolved as a result of cooperation.
